As you meander your way to the top of the Big Island there is a fantastic pot of gold waiting for you at the end, this place is called Pololu Valley. Views of forever ocean paradise with the finest green hues and backdrops of a journey well worth it. Become inspired and go on the hike down to the bottom if you have time and are feeling adventurous to take in the shoreline coast and mountainous terrain. There is a black lava floor waiting at the bottom where the ocean meets the land.
When you arrive at the very end there is a small parking lot for visitors to use. Please be super careful and respectful in this area as the there is no real turnaround so patience is important and required. There are also some local residents that have their homes here as well. When you finally start to take it all in you will realize that this place is one of the most dramatic Hawaiian getaways ever. You can see Maui from North Kohala on a clear day. Panoramic views are pretty much what describes the perimeter of Pololu Valley Lookout. Scenes of old ancient Hawaiian history can be envisioned here. If you are serious about finding some of the most breathtaking Big Island spots, this one is in the top 10 for sure and might even make the top 5 list depending on who you talk to.
The area was never developed which is a good thing to help preserve it's beauty. Earthquakes and tsunamis and the fear of them has kept it this way for many years. Ancient Hawaiians once roamed this unique location and called it their home. The deep rooted history here can only be cherished and understood by those who really want to learn everything they can. The Hawaiian culture in general is so beautiful and rightfully so for many reasons. There are no bathrooms so that is something to keep in mind. Helicopter tours for those seeking additional levels of high level views of aerial adventure are available through private companies.
