Very hard to miss this exotic and private oceanfront location. Please be respectful when there it is one of the last hidden secrets in all of Hawaii. The Big Island is home to these types of places and Keokea Beach Park is just another gem which exhibits a rugged sea cliff coastline displaying old Hawaii in it's most rare form. Another name for Keokea Beach is Boulder Beach. The waves may look harmless to the right side where they crash away from the big boulders, but they do and will creep up on visitors if not careful. Waterways are beautiful in nature at this place with calmer lagoon type waters below.
The newly renovated pavilion in 2006 underwent a $1.4 million renovation since the 6.7 magnitude earthquake had rocked it and damaged it's core. The park sprawls across more than 7 acres of natural Hawaiian wonders. Most visitors come to BBQ and grill, while others come to picnic and even read a book or newspaper up in the pavilion. Amenities here also include a shower, drinking water, fishing, and restrooms. This is one of those amazing off the beaten path locations. One of the true reasons why this park is no packed and bustling with tourists is because there is no white sandy beach. This is how the locals like this place.
There are stories online where adults now reminisce of how amazing their childhood was growing up at Keokea Beach Park. Families would spend the entire day there. Children would even bring their lassos and practice in the parking lot on orange construction cones. Now that is amazing living and not having a care in the world. As the world continues to become more and more congested, nothing will ever replace these incredible Big Island beach parks. The wave watching will mesmerize you for eternity.
