A place unlike any other and one meant for a Hollywood movie. The scenic drive around red road only brings one's imagination to newer heights. Could this truly be one of the last best places of old ancient Hawaii? It actually is. Red Road offers the lucky few some of the finest Puna coastline of Hawaii that anyone will ever be able to truly take in. Also referred to and known as Road 137, it earned it's unique name due to it's red cinder pavement. This scenic coastline drive only has the red cinder on the stretch of road in the northern section down at the end of Kapoho. Highway 137 is an old time Hawaiian journey that can only be explained by experiencing it's charm in person. Due to the recent lava flows 137 ends just down past Issac Hale Beach Park. There was a temporary road that was built over the lava in addition to deal with the current Pele power that too place.

To access 137 you will need to first go down highway 130 in which later they will connect. Multiple beautiful scenes of Hawaii can be found here including Pele's Breath. A famous Hawaiian retreat. Down from red road is the world famous Kehena Beach. You can find some of the most charming Balinese style Hawaiian retreats here that will leave you stunned by their beauty and architecture. Red road used to be super famous for that Sunday drive down to the tide pools at Kapoho and then back on to Hilo for the perfect dinner in the evening. The drive on Red Road rivals any amazing ocean scene any where in the world. This is by far one of the most off the beaten path places to go and see in all of Hawaii especially here on the rainy side of the Big Island.

The narrow road which winds along the ocean is mainly 8 feet wide or so. You will travel over small hills and preview lush green large plants and vegetation along the way. It's advised to take your time not only for safely purposes but also to take it all in. In the year 2000 the rest of the road was actually resurfaced using black asphalt. After all these years people still continue to call it red road even though not all of it remains red. This entire road stretches for 15 miles making it one of the most exotic places in the entire chain of Hawaiian islands. This side of the island has some of the newest land formations available to be seen. For example the new Pohoiki State Park is just once place where a new black sand beach has now been formed.
