Volcano Art Center (VAC) was created in 1974 by a group of diverse and active artists as a nonprofit educational institution. Volcano Art Center operates a popular fine arts gallery in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park today, featuring handcrafted art works by over 230 local artists. VAC also provides activities, workshops, and classes for locals, children, and visitors, including the award-winning Hula Kahiko performance series at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park's kahua hula. Volcano Art Center Gallery, located in Kilauea, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano, creativity, and fire, has been a paradise for visual artists since 1974. A diverse range of artists and artwork means that you will have many options when looking for a distinctive item for your own home or a present for a specific event or individual.
Today, the Kilauea region attracts artists, performers, writers, scientists, and educators from all over the world to create, reflect, study, and enjoy the natural world's beauty and strength. Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus Administration Offices, Gallery, and Educational Facility are in Volcano Village, which is set inside the Niaulani Rain Forest. Volcano Art Center employees, board, artists, and supporters recognise that we are lucky to live and work among such beauty, and a place so alive with inspiration and mana to create, regenerate, and exhilarate! The gallery's art sales benefit the artists and the Volcano community, as well as the cultural, arts education, forest restoration, and professional artist development programmes. For ages, this dynamic and powerful environment has inspired Hawaiian crafts, music, dances, and mythology.
The structure was previously a backpackers' inn that closed down around a century ago. This explains why the interior is separated into small rooms called mini-galleries. The old inn's relics can still be found around the property, most notably the lobby fireplace, which is still operational to this day. From the rooms, you can see the changing environment that inspired the artworks within through the windows. The gallery's historic building provides a warm backdrop for the finely crafted furniture made of native woods, hand-blown glass from Hawai'i's top glass artists, jeweler made of precious and semiprecious stones and metals, and an outstanding collection of two and three dimensional works in paint, photography, clay, fiber, and mixed media. The gallery's art sales benefit the artists and the Volcano community, as well as the cultural, arts education, forest restoration, and professional artist development programs.
