One of the Big Island's greatest legacy parks and surf spots. A place where so many families and surfers call home and rightfully so. This is by far a location in which many memories have been made by so many big island residents. The new black sand beach that was recently formed in 2018 is the result of Kilauea's 2018 lava flow. Many varieties of activities are offered here including swimming, sun bathing, and it also used to be one of the best bodyboarding locations on the entire island. The old boat harbor that was once an easy inlet and outlet for surfers and boats is now a black sand pond instead. This park offers lifeguard service but caution here must always be taken as the waters have many serious conditions at this beach. Pohoiki which stretches 1,000 feet and is a bay, is located just 3 short miles south of Kapoho.

This was and always will be a place known for the quality of fishing too. The likes of Opelu back in the days have been talked about for many decades. At Pohoiki just like the rest of the beautiful miles of Hawaiian coastline you will find some of the most heart revving ocean waters pounding against the glistening black lava shores. A new black sand beach in Puna has been formed and can also be referred to as Isaac Hale Beach Park. Due to all of the 2018 events that took place with the lava flowing, the park finally opened up again in December that same year. Mayor Harry Kim was out to officially address this very special day and it's beautiful people. Pohoiki during the flow was threatened by the huge fissure 8 but someone was still somewhat saved.

The best way to describe it's location is that it is located at the intersection of Kalapana road route 137 and Pohoiki Road. In November of 2018 a new road was created to make access easier again in between Mackenzie State Recreation Area and the likes of Pohoiki Beach Park. Many surfers follow the Pohoiki Surf Reports and the daily forecasts that go with it. When the park was had it's public blessing ceremony on Dec. 6th in 2018 it was a really nice relief for the entire community to finally come together again and realize how we just cannot take these remarkable places for granted ever again. The biggest pond is actually a collapsed lava tube that spans 80 yards inland next to the old boat ramp.
