With the only lodging view available looking out at Halema'uma'u Crater, the Volcano House is as historic as it comes. With moderately cool temperatures in the 60's this place is a refresher from the other hot and humid side we specialize and service known as the Kohala Coast. Volcano House has been around for many years. As a matter of fact it dates back to it's original building structure of 1877, which today is also registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2018 recent eruptions and flows have caused closure of certain areas that may otherwise be typically open, such as the crater's lava tube. The hotel was also closed from May 2018 to October 2018 due to those eruptions and active flows. At the Volcano House there are reasonable accommodations ranging in prices from the high $170 per night fees to well over $250 for the best views possible. There are discounts for Kama'aina local residents too. Dining options are not to be missed either and the desert menu of ice cream options and chocolate cake are sure to please.
Once you have paid your $25 park entry fee you are free to roam around for a day or weekend of exploration. Take a drive down to the bottom which takes approx. 45 minutes at the average speed of 15 miles per hour. You can also stop in to the visitor center and their gifts shops for a really great souvenir to take back when visiting.
The Volcano House has a real fire going in the lobby where rocking chairs and comfy couches are ready to help their guests relax. The building is painted a stunning red that pleases the eye of all to see and enjoy. Cabins and campsites are also a crowd favorite located within the park if you are looking to become more in tune with nature at the volcano's core. The Namakanipaio camper cabins are so unique that there are only 10 of them to make the experience super intimate and not crowded. With a constant mist in the air the weather in Volcano is like nowhere else in the world. Volcano house is also committed to sustainable living. It takes it's recycling program serious and does all that it can to ensure a clean environment in one of the world's kept secrets.
