One of the most mysterious and intriguing places in the world is the Big Island of Hawaii. The Papa'aloa Country Store and Cafe fits so perfectly into a fairly tale ending. This small hidden secret is like no other place and when you finally get a chance to go there, we can promise you that you will not be disappointed. Be sure to order the fresh fish sandwich and for dessert the peanut butter ball should do the trick. Newly opened in 2015 the store and restaurant have continued to thrive now over the last few years. The building however is historical in the cute little Hawaiian plantation town and has been here for years and generations. There was a time once where this business only was able to rely on the word of mouth in the area. Now, with the beautiful artist signs it is a delight to be able to see them from the main road. It really helps.
With amazing local gatherings like bingo night the restaurant and bar has become a super hit for residents living close by. The great location just off the main highway allows visitors and tourists to stop in as well for a friendly daily lunch and refreshment. There is a tranquil stream with waterfall adjacent to this fantastically historic spot. Papaaloa in and of itself is a quant sleepy vintage Hawaiian plantation town. The bagel deluxe, poke bowl, and loco moco are just three really great flavors on their well apointed menu. Other choices entice us to order chicken katsu, hamakua mushroom stir-fry, and even the popular hamburger steak plate. Still yet as mentioned earlier the fresh fish sandwich is the best. This restaurant and bar is also known for it's specialty pizzas and it's options to build your own.
An interesting article has been written that is worth the read in Keola - Papaaloa Country Store & Bar building revival. The way that this community has come together is fantastic and it is always really nice to see new places come about and open up in buildings that have been almost forgotten. Without the two brothers working super hard to make it all happen we would not be able to enjoy a Saturday afternoon visit to this once in a Hawaii lifetime location. A true story of what finding a perfect hole in the wall diner is absolutely all about. The building has been restored to it's original charm and their moto now is "Something for Everyone". Be sure to make this a must see and eat place each time you are winding gently around the Big Island's Hamakua Coast and North Hilo town.
