Honolii Beach Park is one of the best surfing spots on the entire Big Island of Hawaii. This place is not for beginners and frequented by some of the best surfers in Hawaii. The rugged landscaping heading down towards the beautiful surf are almost like out of a dream movie. This entire area is very picturesque. Some reviews online say that this is a local beach and they are right. You won't find all the tourist congestion at Honolii Beach Park. Real surfing and bodyboarding can be enjoyed here and even just spectating can be very soothing on the soul. The waves can get very big. This gray sand is super special and natural in it's state, it brings back the olden days of how Hawaii used to be. The Hilo side of the island is very much so unique and it is why so many people are starting to discover it.
At Honolii you can find all kinds of people surfing from young to old and everyone in between. On calmer days you can see parents teaching kids how to paddle board too. This however is one of the rockiest beaches on the entire island. If you are willing to rough it out getting in the water than you will be just fine. The bottom has some rough rocks so it is always recommended to watch your step at this place. The one drawback is the one way in one way out approach. The road does wind around and go back out on a scenic drive but getting in is pretty much a one way venue. The parking can be tight here so please be respectful and patient. Especially if you are just visiting. Some residents have been coming here for years and truly deserve the laid back respect this place offers.
This outlandish surf spot cannot be duplicated. It is a one of a kind. Some of the surfers and bodyboarders that visit regularly seem convinced that one of the reasons they love it so much is for the consistent flow of waves and sets coming in towards the coastline. It's easy access by turning off from the main belt highway makes it enjoyable and accessible for those coming from the Hamakua Coast and those from South Hilo. Walking down the paved path from the parking and road is it's access point.Honolii can have strong currents and is not advised for new swimmers and those just learning to surf out on their own. The winter brings it's largest swells while the summer months is a great time to relax in the calmer waters at this fantastic east Big Island beach park jewel.
