A worldly masterpiece water sensation. The Akaka Falls State Park in North Hilo brings are scene that is hard to describe and explain in words alone. One has to visit and see this experience in person and particular with friends. The 442 foot plunge should be all that needs to be said. When you take that simple yet powerful statement and realize it's powerful height only then can visitors and those seeking the most out of life realize that it is beyond a natural wonder. This is an enjoyable relaxed hike for most people and not at all difficult to navigate. With lush tropical vegetation running abundantly along each side of your walk, the viewpoints are exposed from every possible angle.
Plenty of parking available but for visitors who do not have a state ID card they will have to pay for parking. There is usually a parking patrol person siting at the entrance to enforce this. The paved route helps a lot with the walk but unfortunately at this time is not wheelchair accessible. The actual walk down to the waterfall is very short 10-15 minutes. The entire overall experience to go all the way around is approximately 20 to 25 minutes long. With a wooden overhead pavilion down by the waterfall this spectacle is a world of a wonder and then some.
The easy to follow around meandering walkway loops nicely. Akaka Falls has been known to attract visitors from all over the world. With two stunning viewpoint lookouts the path requires a little bit of stamina but is not overly exerting. With steel handrails in place and protection areas it helps us feel much safer when there. However, all persons visiting Akaka Falls should exercise all means of caution, especially when bringing you children. The steep drops all around the park can be intimidating at times and for good reasons. All sorts of plant life is seen here, including bamboo, ginger, and even monstera plants. The large size of these beautiful growth like green plants is that due to all the rain they display their full and massive size.
