The history of sweetbread being introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese sugar workers dates back to the 19th century. This tradition of eating and enjoying the bread has now become a family and visitor staple. Different flavors are being offered to those willing to try them. From Guava to other exotic flavors the possibilities have been endless. This time honored recipe was first offered to resorts and their restaurants which in turn has resulted in this incredible Hawaiian location that we now have all come to call - Punalu'u Bake Shop.
Just like it says it on the entry sign hanging above the bake shop, welcome to the southernmost bakery in the USA. This place not only smells super fresh it tastes like no other fresh bread in all of Hawaii. If you are traveling from Volcano back to the Kona side this is a really wonderful place to stop along the way. To your surprise there is also a really great purple shrimp truck right across the street. The steak plates are $20 so be ready to enjoy some amazing food. You can also top it off with an $8 acai bowl or $13 shrimp plate too for those who love seafood. The Punalu'u Bake Shop is known for it's famous sweetbread and has been serving up local residents and it's visitors with some of the best baked goods on the Big Island of Hawaii. The line up of patient customers on a busy Sunday afternoon says it all.

Located very close to the world famous Punaluu Black Sand Beach this place just makes it all even that much better.
