Ancient lava tubes and historical caves used for shelter are just some of the highlights that you will see along the meandering trails of Kalahuipua'a historic park. Within the park there is a super beautifully restored vintage Hawaiian home. Painted with a fresh blue exterior it really goes nicely with it's red historical metal sheet roof. It's basically a picture perfect moment right out of a movie. The shores at this majestic park remind us of how things in Hawaii used to be. Very unspoiled and in it's natural form. The low lying banks allow you to enter the waters to cool off in the lagoons. Much wildlife can be spotted here including fish, eels, birds, mongoose. This is one of the best kept secrets on the entire island as most tourists do not even know that it exists.
One of the world's best mega resorts is Mauna Lani. Many petroglyphs can be explored here, trails for miles abound, and best of all you will not see many people here as you take time to unwind with nature. There are several legendary tales and one of them mentions that servants would carry fresh fish to the Hawaiian Ali'i on these trails. The true meaning and definition of Kalahuipua'a is "family of pigs" but really means the " abundance of food". Mullet in ancient times were the fish that was mostly stocked in the fish ponds and became readily available for meal time. The ponds here at this particular historic park once belonged to King Kamehameha the Great.
A part of Mauna Lani Resort's commitment to excellence is to preserve and enhance Hawaii's culture. One of these devotions is to take good care of this historic park. It is believed that Hawaiians lived in this area of approximately 800 years before being discovered by the western civilization. Walking these trails simply takes you back in time. The parking lot is conveniently located across from the Mauna Lani Sports and Fitness Club. For those that absolutely fall in love with this park you can explore the possibility of purchasing a condo (Mauna Lani Terrace) located along the shores of this fine waterfront setting.
