The Big Island of Hawaii is one of the most sacred and enchanting places on earth, both real estate and wildlife wise. They symbolize longevity, safety, and mana (spiritual energy) in Hawaiian culture. Local islanders, as well as guests, know and love these wonderful creatures. Honu, also known as green sea turtles, are treasured throughout all of the islands, seen as ancestral spirits offering lifelong protection, wisdom, and guidance. These majestic animals have been featured in ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, artwork, and mythology. They have been a large part of Hawaiian practice for decades, and they still continue to inspire joy and admiration into the lives of many as the years go by. Snorkeling at Pauoa Bay or Beach 69 are two surefire ways to get up close to seeing these beautifully majestic creatures in the wild.

Honu can live up to approximately 70 years. They are seen as a powerful metaphor representing the connection between people, land, and the sea. Many legends portray Hawaiian sea turtles as spiritual guides who protect the local Hawaiian children. They are often described as sacred guardians sent to guide the polynesian voyagers. One specific tale tells of the turtles’ beginning. They say that the great hero ‘Ai’ai created honu by drawing marks onto a rock laying near the shore, turning it into a turtle and swimming into the ocean. Turtle designs often appear in ancient rock art, kapa cloth patterns, and even string games. They are often depicted as messengers, a canoe that unites lovers, and even the foundation of certain islands. These creatures have roamed the Earth for more than 150 million years. They are ancient spirits as well as modern-day creatures. It is important that we respect them as the wonderful beings that they are. 

Hopefully you can come to appreciate these beautiful animals for all that they are and more. Unfortunately, some people don’t and it has led to negative effects. As of 1978, green sea turtles have been considered endangered. Hawaiian honu are sadly faced by the threat of extinction. Hawaii is one of the very few places that sea turtles make their homes, especially the Big Island of Hawaii. A couple of their favorite spots are Kūki’o Beach and Kīholo Bay. They love to bask in the sun and soak up the light. They tend to lay their eggs in these places as well. They nurture their young on the beautiful sands of the Big Island. Here on the island, they find paradise in the lazy, warm sunlight. As they are endangered, the public is absolutely not allowed to touch or harass the turtles in any way. We are allowed to admire them from a respective distance of 10 feet(3 meters). Remember to be respectful and considerate of their space, doing otherwise could result in heavy consequences. The beauty of the Big Island lies in the eyes of the beholder. Fortunately for all of us, we have the Hawaiian honu.
