LIFE IN PARADISE DEFINED BY IT'S PURE SIMPLICITY - PUAKO (BIG ISLAND)
Pauko is located just four miles south of Kawaihae. For nearly a century, this small coastal hamlet on the Big Island's Kohala Coast has been a favorite destination for visitors and Hawaiians alike. Puako Bay is a three-mile ribbon of white sand beach that serves as a great starting point for a variety of beach activities. That little community's narrative began nearly a millennium ago.
It has been a fishing town, a sugar plantation farm, a honey farm, a cattle drive feeding station, and is now the sole residential oceanfront community on the island of Hawaii's South Kohala Coast. Many people believe Puako to haven of the most magnificent reefs in the state. There are large caverns and caves to explore while scuba diving, as well as colorful concentration of coral and marine life to see. Puako is steeped in Hawaiian history and culture. To observe the petroglyphs, walk south along the coastal trail (carvings etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts).
Approximately 3,000 distinct designs can be found across the Puako Archaeological Fields. Tourists and locals alike can explore these historic engravings on their own or as part of a guided excursion. There are charming stores and an art gallery in Kawaihae, which is a 10 minute drive just north of Puako. Waimea is also a 20 minute drive upcountry and has an elevation of 2500 feet. North Kohala is ideal for a day trip.
There are historical sites and views of Old Hawaii along the beachfront road. Pololu Valley, at the end of the road, a wonderful place with breathtaking landscapes. Today Puako is known for its beautiful beaches and resorts. It is also known as an upscale residential community with some of the most expensive homes on the island and all of Hawaii for that matter. There are also several luxury condos for rental as well as villa beach homes amiable to each luxury buyers liking.
