Approximately 3,000 distinct designs can be found across the Puako Archaeological Fields. Tourists and locals alike can explore these historic engravings on their own or as part of a guided excursion. There are charming stores and an art gallery in Kawaihae, which is a 10 minute drive just north of Puako. Waimea is also a 20 minute drive upcountry and has an elevation of 2500 feet. North Kohala is ideal for a day trip.

There are historical sites and views of Old Hawaii along the beachfront road. Pololu Valley, at the end of the road, a wonderful place with breathtaking landscapes. Today Puako is known for its beautiful beaches and resorts. It is also known as an upscale residential community with some of the most expensive homes on the island and all of Hawaii for that matter.
